Today's Discoveries
Apr. 10th, 2006 04:54 pmRight. As you may or may not know, I was at a conference for a research project that's starting in May and on which I'll be working for most of the summer. Cool stuff, really. But conferences? Not generally my thing. Still. This one had it's advantages. So... among today's discoveries:
a) it IS possible to have a data system that makes sense, works, and that can be operated by a bunch of 40-odd-year-old technophobes. Now, remains to be seen if it'll stay up for the two months it needs to, but this shows potential.
b) professionals actually DO get through piles of paper in less than 4 hours. While covering the essentials. And covering actual ground and not repeating. Which leads me to believe that I've been wasting most of my time while in Uni ('cause this was done at a decent speed, dammit!) and that I work with people who're stuck on details and not actually getting anything done. Not that this is news, mind.
c) Places with more marble than wood are vaguely intimidating, and adding tapestries to the mix is really just overkill. Dear decorator: enough already.
d) My mother can't manage computers. At all. Keep her away from the keyboard, people.
e) Women-only office spaces seem to breed petty politics. Maybe all office spaces do, but those I've seen that HAVEN'T been all women haven't had the same degree of it. GAH, but I don't want to get dragged into this, it's petty BS, and I really don't feel like doing the backstabbing routine. SUCH a waste of time and energy, and really, who the hell CARES.
f) There's something both awkward and amusing about suddenly being the colleague of a woman who last saw me when I was about two feet high.
... all in all, a productive day. I'm reassured. And somewhat amused. Yay!
And, people? Role-playing. This coming weekend. Who might be interested that I haven't managed to get a hold of individually?
