Research Questions
Mar. 8th, 2004 02:43 pmMany people around here seem to be quite well-read. I need references to books, websites, articles... anything you can remember on a few topics.
I need information on courtesans. I've read Susan Griffin's book, but I need something less concerned with admiring every single woman who can even vaguely justify the name, and more concerned with actual events/occurrences, analysis of the name and what it means, influences, how the women in question were influential, etc. Also preferably dealing with women from before the 1800s, but that's not a requirement. (If you've got any good fics, stories, or novels that deal with this, rec them, as well. This is as much personal interest as it is a paper.)
I'm also doing a 2-hour lecture on the nature of sacrifice in Pagan and Christian religious tradition. I've read Campbell, of course, and I'm fairly well-versed in the Christian tradition. I need references to Pagan myths that deal with self-sacrifice, and, for some reason, I'm drawing a blank. Maybe Odin, but other than that? Also, could the use of blood in ritual be covered under this heading? I'd like to go into that, but it seems a bit of a stretch.
And, in a simpler request, I need a good picture of ancient Greek women's clothing. Can anyone think of where I might find that?
Gods. By the end of the semester, someone will find me, buried under a pile of essays. I'm not complaining, though... the topics are all rather interesting.
